Have you made your website mobile friendly yet?

If not, you are potentially looking at lost traffic and a significant drop in search engine rankings not too far down the road according to our friends at Google.

According to the Google announcement:

Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.

In January Google began sending warnings to webmasters for not complying with mobile best practices. Those warnings, as it turned out, foretold the inevitable change to Google’s algorithm.

Why the recent push for a mobile website?

According to a June 23, 2014, report from comScore, smartphones and tablets are now “combined to account for 60% of total digital media time spent, up from 50% a year ago.” In the same report comScore provided a graph showing the steady growth of both “Mobile” and “Mobile App” percentage usage as well as a steady decline in “Desktop” usage.
